Hebben multitaskers baat bij 'multiscreens'?

Kenniswerkers zuchten steeds meer onder een overvloed aan informatie. E-mailberichten, IM’s, documenten, websites en online agenda’s schreeuwen om aandacht. In een artikel in de New York Times wordt een oplossing genoemd: meerdere beeldschermen.

In de Verenigde Staten zijn 'multiscreens' meest recente ontwikkeling op de werkplek. Deze ontwikkeling zou blijken uit een stijging in de verkoop van het aantal beeldschermen. Er worden op dit moment al meer beeldschermen dan desktops verkocht.

In het artikel komt zelfs een kenniswerker met drie (!) monitoren aan het woord. Het middelste scherm wordt gebruikt voor e-mailen, schrijven en redigeren, terwijl de schermen aan de linker- en rechterzijde nieuwssites, blogs en Twitterfeeds tonen.

Meerdere schermen, meer productiviteit?
De gedachte achter het gebruik van meerdere beeldschermen is dat het de productiviteit zou verhogen. Dit is echter lastig te bewijzen of te meten, deels omdat het afhankelijk is van het soort werk.

Wel bleek uit een (door een beeldschermfabrikant gefinancierd) onderzoek van de Universiteit van Utah dat de productiviteit stijgt als redactiewerk wordt uitgevoerd met meerdere schermen.
