Vanaf vandaag is het eerste deel van het boek ‘Aan de slag met Het Nieuwe Werken’ in conceptvorm beschikbaar. Ik nodig je van harte uit om het via deze site te downloaden door een abonnement op de nieuwsbrief te nemen. In dit artikel wil ik aangeven waarom ik een nieuw boek aan het schrijven ben en waarom ik dat boek nu al in conceptvorm ter beschikking stel.

Toen in april 2007 mijn boek Het Nieuwe Werken verscheen was dat begrip nog maar bij weinigen bekend. Goed, Microsoft had een whitepaper gepubliceerd met die titel in mei 2005 en Veldhoen + Company had het al een decennium over de nieuwe manier van werken, maar het begrip Het Nieuwe Werken was nog niet echt ingeburgerd. Inmiddels zitten we in de tweede helft van 2009 en je struikelt letterlijk over de websites, artikelen, seminars, blogs en tweets waarin Het Nieuwe Werken evangelie wordt verkondigd. Met evenzoveel experts; en evenzoveel vaders van het succes. Het is een echte hype geworden; en daar zitten naast geweldige mogelijkheden ook grote risico’s aan.

Voor mij draait Het Nieuwe Werken primair om de mens. De mens als waardevol individu die dankzij Het Nieuwe Werken in staat is een betere balans aan te brengen tussen werk en privé in zijn/haar leven; en de mens als kritische productiefactor die veel beter kan gaan presteren in de postindustriële maatschappij waarin we leven. Prettiger werken en beter presteren: het is een typisch geval van win-win. Ik beschouw het als mijn missie om mensen en organisaties in te laten zien dat het afscheid nemen van het industrieel denken bevrijdend werkt voor alle partijen: weg uit de benauwde en beklemmende sfeer van wantrouwen, regels & procedures, bureaucratie, lethargie, continue werkdruk en op naar de drie v’s: vrijheid, verantwoordelijkheid en vertrouwen. De vis die uit de kom springt staat zowel voor het individu als voor de organisatie. Steeds meer organisaties voeren het in en zijn daarin succesvol. Dat zijn de geweldige mogelijkheden.

Maar er zijn ook grote risico’s. Het Nieuwe Werken is geen beschermd begrip en iedereen kan het gebruiken voor zijn eigen doeleinden. Je ziet het al voor je: kwakzalvende pseudo-experts die zichzelf aanprijzen als nieuwe werken goeroes en bedrijven wel even zullen helpen de omslag te maken; en organisaties die de kreet Het Nieuwe Werken gebruiken als een eufemisme voor het doorvoeren van ordinaire bezuinigingen op huisvestingskosten. De kernbegrippen vrijheid, verantwoordelijkheid en vertrouwen worden daar door het management slechts met de lippen beleden. Ik ben helaas al twee bedrijven tegengekomen die het zo hanteren – en dat in alle hevigheid ontkennen natuurlijk.

Vandaar dit nieuwe boek dat bestaat uit twee delen. Het eerste deel laat nog eens zien wat Het Nieuwe Werken is, waarom het nodig is, wat er bij komt kijken en wat het oplevert. Mijn ideeën ten opzichte van het eerste boek uit 2007 kun je daarbij zien als voortschrijdend inzicht: beter onderbouwd en meer uitgekristalliseerd, maar in essentie dezelfde. Het tweede deel heeft tot doel om mensen en organisaties te helpen zelf aan de slag te gaan met Het Nieuwe Werken. Allereerst door te kijken hoe anderen dat gedaan hebben of aan het doen zijn: wat ging daar goed en wat ging er fout? Daarna komt aan de orde hoe je het zelf binnen je eigen organisatie kunt of moet aanpakken. Die ‘aanpak’ is mede gebaseerd op de tientallen gesprekken die ik de afgelopen 2 jaar gevoerd heb met ervaringsdeskundigen. Die aanhalingstekens heb ik erbij gezet, want het gaat niet om een formele aanpak of methodiek. Daarvan is bijvoorbeeld juist door die gesprekken aan het licht gekomen dat een rigide methodiek niet werkt. In mijn optiek is het invoeren van Het Nieuwe Werken telkens weer een andere, unieke exercitie die ook echt moet passen bij de cultuur (hoe men denkt) en de natuur (wat men doet) van de organisatie. Maar er zijn natuurlijk wel gemeenschappelijke en generieke aspecten die overal terugkomen. Enfin, lees dat maar in deel 2 vanaf medio augustus.
